Membership

Membership services on Bear Island are located at the Minowaabandan-Gamiing Maawanjihidiwining, the Lakeview Gathering Place. Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) cards are issued on island by the Membership Clerk/Indian Registry Administrator. We provide on-site photos for your status cards. Two pieces of identification are required when issuing a laminated Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) card (renewal, replacement, lost/stolen). Acceptable forms of ID include: Driver’s Licence, Health Card, Birth Certificate, Firearms Licence, Provincial ID Card, Student ID Card, Certificate of Indian Status (expired less than 6 months), Nexus Card (counts as 2 pieces), Passport (counts as 2 pieces).

For research purposes, family tree charts are located at the TFN Library and at the TFN Membership Office located at the Minowaabandan-Gamiing Maawanjihidiwining, the Lakeview Gathering Place on Bear Island. Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)

The Indian Act is the Canadian federal legislation first passed in 1876 that sets out certain federal government obligations. It provides for the registration of persons as Status Indians, identifies who is entitled to be registered and who is not, sets guidelines for Departmentally Administered Band Lists. There have been major changes made to the original Indian Act, the most recent being in 2017.

Can you apply under Bill S-3?

You can now apply to register as an Indian under the Indian Act and get a Secure Certificate of Indian Status (secure status card) at the same time.
You may be eligible for Indian status as a Bill S-3 applicant if:

your direct-line female ancestor (mother, grandmother, great-grandmother; not aunt) lost her Indian status through marriage to a non-Indian man before April 17, 1985
or

your direct-line female ancestor was born out of wedlock of an Indian father and a non-Indian mother between September 4, 1951, and April 16, 1985
or

your direct-line ancestor lost their Indian status as the result of their mother’s marriage to a non-Indian man between September 4, 1951, and April 16, 1985
or

your direct-line ancestor lost their Indian status as the result of a successful protest based on their non-Indian parentage between September 4, 1951 and April 16, 1985

Apply for Status
